Finnian Treherne, a composer with a mixed cultural background that includes British, Czech, and German heritage, developed an early appreciation for music while growing up in Tuscany, where he played multiple instruments including the piano, cello, accordion, and guitar. Since 2012, he has resided in Austria and recently began pursuing studies at the mdw ELAK university course and media composition at the VMI in October 2022. Finnian's musical style is characterized by a unique blend of electroacoustic and experimental elements from his mdw education, combined with classical and orchestral traditions, with a primary focus on creating compositions for film and games. His artistic influences include Thomas Newman, Ennio Morricone, Jesper Kyd, and Jeremy Soule.

  • My life has always been characterised by a strong artistic influence of my family. Both my parents are artists, and particularly my father loves to work in nature. I could not be more grateful for the upbringing I had and for the constant support I have had from my parents in my artistic endeavours.

I was born in 2002 in Montepulciano, Tuscany, where I grew up with Italy´ s rich history and culture. The drums of the annual Giostra sparked a deep passion for rhythm and drums. With the age of three I started playing the cello at the Hans Werner Henze institute, which I soon gave up for the more promising piano. With the age of nine, I got a field recorder which introduced me to appreciating sound, something that would become very relevant later on and has led me to my current studies.

I never found myself being able to completely express myself and tried other instruments such as the accordion and guitar. I felt that I was missing something.

In 2012 my family and I moved to Austria and in 2015 I visited the Ikult Lab Raabs/Thaya summer camp organised by mdw professors for the first time. There I learnt that there were programs called DAWS (Digital Audio Workstations) and that one could produce music on a computer. (till then I had very limited use on a computer and we had only had internet for two years as my parents were very strict). This course introduced me to other areas too, such as Soundpainting, Field Recording and beatboxing. At school I focused on languages including Latin and Ancient Greek.

Only during the Covid Pandemic did suddenly have the time and motivation to try out producing music. The DAW of choice was FL Studio and combining different libraries I found myself in a different world.

In 2022 I started two university courses, “ELAK” at the mdw and “media composition” at the VMI (which i discontinued in July 2023)

My work now is characterised by work in nature, using organic sounds, acoustic instruments and manipulating them in search of new sounds.

I now work in Reaper and for film projects in Logic.
